There are two types of death in the Bible, the first death, which Jesus calls sleep, and the 2nd death, to which you don't ever wake up from.
Unless you are Jesus, for He died the 2nd death. For us. So that we don't have to.
While the idea of these different types of death can be seen throughout scripture, it is Revelation that explicitly labels them as '1st', and '2nd'.
- Revelation 2.11: He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.
- Revelation 20.6: Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.
- Revelation 20.14: Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
- Revelation: 21.8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.
Death is separation from God - seperation from breath, seperation from life. It is the result of sin and trying to live life apart from God. The good news is, that God can bring breath back to his seperated child. So when Jesus comes back, the Bible talks about a 1st resurrection - those who the Bible says 'died in Christ'. (I Thess. 4.16)
So when you die, you want to die in Christ (you do that by living in him - this again is not a trick, God 'll take care fo this too if you want him too), that way you'll pop back up from your 'sleep' - that is be resurrected - when Jesus comes. Then you'll never die again.
However, if you choose to go it alone, and not die 'in Christ' you'll pop back up at the 2nd resurrection, and be part of the scene where everyone who has ever lived will see the answer to the devils accusations of God not being fair. At the end of this scene (Revelation 20.7-10) the 2nd death comes for all those who do not wish to live with Christ. The Bible says there is no coming back from this.
