One of the biggest dangers of getting out of a rut, is that you will form a new… often even deeper… rut in which to travel this life.
Jesus put it this way (recorded for us in Luke 11.24-26), when an unclean spirit is ordered out, it wonders around looking for a place to rest. And when it does not find any, it returns with 7 more unclean spirits to make a home in us.
Ruts feel safe. The gradual deepening walls around us hide much of the tragedy along the way. A well worn rut gives us a sense of security, telling us we can’t get lost if we follow this track.
The trouble is, we’ve really no idea where we are headed if we are simply following the crowd. Seeking the latest fashions, desperately trying to be liked by those around, making sure we do not ever stand out for the wrong reasons… all this can lead us far far way from where we thought we’d end up. Far far away from Jesus.
So sure… break out of the rut. Fill your life with good healthy things. Don’t settle. Keep learning, keep growing.
But as you jump out of one rut, talk to God about making sure you don’t simply form another. Rather, walk daily with your Lord, letting Him be the one who leads and guides.
