When I was about 15 someone posed the question to me in a youth Sabbath School Class - 'why did Jesus have to die? I mean, why couldn't he just take us to heaven'.
Later... I had to give baptismal studies to a group of 11 and 12 year olds. And I thought maybe I'd got it figured out... but I didn't really grasp it with all my being until I got to sit in one of Bills Bible studies.
I was at camp meeting, and was given the task of introducing him at the week long seminar he was going to give. I soon realized I was the only person in the room that didn't know him. We went on to have some good Aussie/English banter at the beginning of each session, where he told me I had a good sense of humor! I was chuffed!
Pastor Bill Liversidge died this week. Which is such a loss. His Bible studies were scary to attend, because while you left knowing more than you came in knowing, he could rake you through an intense process to get you there! No one napped in one of these 'Inductive Bible Studies' as he liked to call them.
I'll finish by taking this opportunity to recommend his book 'Victory in Jesus' which you can find on amazon in it's more general form (called Overcoming Through Jesus), or at his web site here where he sells it in it's Adventist form - that is how we as a church came to these conclusions. It's wonderful.
And Bill will be sorely missed.
