It wasn't that such a famous person was coming to make us feel better. It wasn't even because he sings so well. But all of us on the production crew saw this as the biggest event we'd be putting on. We had been working together just over a week now, and we were pulling together like any good team would. But this was about to be a step above anything we'd had done so far. We would be working with professionals, producing a concert to be broadcast. I think it is safe to say that this was the biggest event any of us had been involved with putting on.
Four years back now, Steve Green came to my church here in Merced. It was a freaky good luck kind of thing that turned out to be such an incredible blessing. And now here he was again at out camp meeting. The same guy whether performing to 200, or 5,000.
A choir had been practicing all week to back four or five songs at the beginning and the end. There was to be another kids choir in the middle of the concert too, and now the time had come.
Sabbath worship is often our biggest event at camp meeting, but we'd just finished that, and we had to ramp up right away for a 3 pm start. Lunch was brought to us, radio's all set, mic's, video, choirs, risers ... there were so many people doing exactly what we were all supposed to be doing.
I'm so glad to say, that it went really smoothly, and we all felt we'd done it as well as we could. The icing on the cake was when Steve Green told our conference president that this was one of the most organized events he'd even been part of. Well, as long as the swan glides beautifully across the water - we'll just keep paddling like crazy maniacs below the water!
You can see the full concert here. It's lovely.
