There are many philosophies that say their way is the best way for the world to be wealthy - whether it be the trickle down economy on one side, or the sharing out equally on the other... but Jesus, while teaching his followers said this: The meek in inherit the earth. It so often seems that Jesus us working off a completely different hymn sheet. Hallelujah!
The second beatitude is much more inclusive, doesn't depend on your efforts, and goes like this: Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Things Jesus DIDN't Say, presented to emphasize the things He DID say.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ESV
God blesses those people
who depend only on him.
They belong to the kingdom
of heaven! CEV
Luke 11.28 says, Blessed are the people who hear the word of God, and keep it. It's not enough to read and know the details, the stories and the truths of scripture. Jesus says the blessing comes from keeping the word, i.e., doing what it says.
John 7.7 Jesus says that the world cannot hate you. For it is Jesus in you that they hate. Jesus convicts us of evil. Though reading verse 8 as well, it could be argued that Jesus will wait for the right time to convict. But know... if you are hated for your faith, it's because someone is rejecting Jesus. Resist the urge to fight back, and pray for them. Seriously, literally... pray for them.
In fact, Jesus says (and you can read this in John 7.16) that His teaching is not His... but from the One who sent Him. The Trinity will continue to mess with you here! But the idea that Jesus was not a Lone Ranger... but instead one who subjected His mission to the lead of another... and who lived to serve others, is very important to the mission of our Savior.
Ok... Jesus did liken his coming to a thief in the night. And he did tell his disciples that no one knows exactly when he's coming. But Jesus waits not to frustrate us... but for us to be ready. For the world to see this sin experience through. For more on this, head on over to Matthew 24.
When I shop on Amazon I love to see the word "prime" in blue by anything I might wish to purchase. This means I'll get 2 day "free" shipping because I am a prime member.
Sometimes the words "add-on item" appear, which means if I my order totals a certain amount, this add-on item will be shipped free with the rest of my purchases.
Jesus is not an add-on item. He's not something you get if you've been good enough, or give up certain other things. Jesus loved you before you could even think. He gives his life to you ... period. Sure you choose whether to accept or not - but guess what? It's unconditional love - not an add-on feature.
I write these things Jesus DIDN'T say, in order to emphasize the things He DID say. Never has one popped out at me quite as much as this one.
Jesus just never said anything close to this. And it hurts my eyes to even see it here in this way. And yet, so many Christians (and their would be TV leaders / politicians) live as if this above statement were true.
Jesus says things like - and you shall know my followers by their love... Love your enemies... Turn the other cheek... I came to seek and save those who are lost... the healthy do not need a doctor, but I come for the sick...
And yet, even in the most loving of christian churches and organizations, there are those who are acceptable, and those who are not. If we really are about Jesus, and not here to perpetuate some existence of our own, then we need to not only get comfortable with the idea of loving everyone... but feel very uncomfortable until we do.
In fact, Jesus was kind of like a broken record - "your faith has made you well". Faith seems to be a key ingredient. And apparently, you don't need a whole lot of it either. Just some to make you act on your belief.
As always, this is offered in order to emphasize what He DID say.
