Is your back against the wall? Does the immediate future look bleak? Are you not sure what to do next? Are you stuck between that proverbial rock and a hard place?
There is this lesser known miracle story in 2 Kings chapter 3 that should give you encouragement today.
Israel was facing war against the Moabites. Their cunning plan was to get Judah on their side and attack their enemies from the wilderness of Edom. Then the Edomites got involved. Now they had three armies, all trying to fight the Moabites. They had their army set, everything was going right according to their plan... only there was no water for their people or animals. The Moabites were going to be able to take them easily.
They got scared.
"What should we do?" Cries the king of Israel to the king of Judah.
King Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, responds "Is there no prophet of God with us? If there is, we can ask God what to do through him."
That's when one of the officials steps forward and suggests that there is this Elisha. He had once been Elijahs personal assistant.
“Why are you coming to me?” Elisha asked the king of Israel. “Go to the pagan prophets of your father and mother!” Kind of a dig at him there.
But the king of Israel - who did have pagan parents - calls Elisha out on this. He says he fights for God, but that the moabites are going to take them.
Elisha replied, “As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I wouldn’t even bother with you except for my respect for King Jehoshaphat of Judah. Now bring me someone who can play the harp.”
There's some history here. It's real. It produces feelings. It has to be overcome.
Enter some harp music. While it''s being played the power of God came over Elisha, who shares that God is going to provide pools of water. Not from rain, but directly. This dry valley was going to be filled with water. And when the morning sacrifices were being offered the next day, water suddenly appeared. Everywhere.
The Bible says in 2 Kings 3.18 ~ But this is only a simple thing for God. He was also going to give them victory against the Moabites.
What's your dry desert today? Are some of your best laid plans coming up short? Will you remember that God is at hand? And longs to help his people. Hang out with his people, and become part of his people.
ONE MORE THING:
And while you wait for God to act... and your patience is wearing thin, maybe you need to find some harp music.
